Game Night’s opening sequence is so steeped in comedy archetypes you feel like you already know where everything will lead. Instead the film offers a pleasant surprise by stepping in a direction that is much more clever and charming than the trailer lets on, leaving the overtrod genre of raunchy comedy behind. I’m looking at you, Horrible Bosses. The characters are written with a playful drive to one-up each other, bursting to display their unique and nerdy sets of trivia knowledge (Jarvis is the butler to which fictional character?, How do you mix a “Harvey Walbanger”?, Which Harry Potter book features a magic egg?). The game-within-a-game plot line marries the comedy elements with a feel-good adventure. Along the way the characters explore questions of sibling rivalry, the stress of starting a family, and what to look for in an adult relationship.
